The Claret Jug is a coveted trophy given to the champion winner of the Open Championship. Also referred to as the Golf Champion Trophy, this trophy is among the most desired and revered trophies in the United Kingdom. In the US, this Open Championship is called the British Open. Claret Jug trophies tend to be considered the pinnacle of success for any golfer.
The dark red wine claret coloring is often categorised as being elite. The history of Claret Jug trophies goes back to 1872. This legendary trophy is awarded every year to the champion of the Open golf tournament. The original trophy is kept and a replica is given to the winner along with his name engraved. When we talk of Claret Jug trophies, their history and source, the story is unfinished without the mention of the young and gifted golf star Tom Morris. He was frequently referred to as Young Tom Morris as his father, Sr. Tom Morris or Old Tom Morris, performed as a partner.
With junior Tom Morris earning the Championship Belt 3 times consecutively there was the demand of a new trophy to honor this world champion for his success. The Challenge Belt was made of rich Moroccan leather adorned with emblems and ornate silver buckles making it a priceless win. This belt was given away to the winner only on three wins in succession.
Once Tom Morris Junior won 3 times in a row, he became the owner of this unique belt. On his subsequent win in 1872 the three clubs, namely the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, Prestwick, as well as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, contributed ten pounds for a new trophy instead of yet another belt. This new trophy was named The Golf Champion Trophy. When Young Tom Morris went on the following year to win the championship once again for the 4th time, the trophy wasn't yet ready to be presented to him, and so he was offered a medal instead. Though his was the first name to become engraved on the trophy, the very first Claret Jug Trophy was first awarded to Tom Kidd, the 1873 winner. This trophy was created by Mackay Cunningham and Company of Edinburgh with 1873 embossed on it.
The revered Claret Jug Trophy showed up twice as a memorial on five pound Scottish banknotes which were issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland. The very first was in the year 2004 when the illustrious Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Scotland celebrated its 250th anniversary and the second time was in 2005, using Jack Nicklaus, the "golden bear" of American golf holding the Jug like a symbol to seal his retirement.
Since 1928, the original Claret Jug Trophy has been displayed in the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews, Scotland.
